Vertov (real name: Dennis Kaufman, 'Dziga' from the mechanical noise of a working camera) was one of the pioneers of early Soviet newsreels. This documentary, his first feature, is an extraordinary tour de force using exuberant trick photography and dynamic editing to capture a day in the life of a composite city from every conceivable angle. But beyond that, it's a powerful and surprisingly modern visual essay on cinema itself.

With an introduction and piano accompaniment by Paul Shallcross

"This could change your child and change you... it is the only silent film that needs no qualification or apology. It is perfect. It is new still. And it makes you love the world" David Thomson

Director & Starring: Buster Keaton
USA, 1920 18 minutes

A wonderfully fast-paced and delightfully anarchic film featuring some of Keaton's most acrobatic stunts. The Romeo and Juliet story is transported to a pair of city tenements and given a happy and hilarious finale with Buster rescuing his Juliet as the top man of a three-tier, standing-on-shoulders, stunt-walking team.

At The Courtyard the film is sponsored by
