Almodovar's first hit is full of his trademark kinky characters and aberrant behaviour but is at heart a very funny farce. Distraught by the break up with her boyfriend, Pepa prepares a gazpacho laced with sleeping pills. She is however saved from suicide by her best friend Candela, a fugitive from justice. However, the shenanigans really begin when Pepa's ex-lover's grown son arrives with his wife-to-be Marisa who inadvertently drinks the gazpacho! Outlandishly inventive, garish and irrepressible Almodovar shows a complete faith in the torrential subconscious. In this, his most extravagantly stylish film, gaiety, violence and tragedy jostle together most dangerously.

The screening will be introduced by Jo Eliot, film lecturer at Bristol University
