When her husband is killed Audrey tries to come to terms with her grief by reaching out to an unlikely ally, his best friend, Jerry, a recovering heroin addict who she previously despised. A sensitive, poignant film with a European sensibility despite its American setting, the heart of the film is the uneasy, tender, tense relationship that develops between them. Del Toro gives a magnetic, restrained performance as Jerry, at once generous and empathetic, and yet also weak and unreliable. In this her first English language film Susanne Bier succeeds in creating both a genuine sense of loss and a sense of hope for her characters.
