A Jewish Bend It Like Beckham, though nostalgic, this funny, feel-good film largely avoids schmaltz thanks to a collection of finely judged performances led by the comically tragic Sulkin whose bar mitzvah clashes with the World Cup final. So while he plots against the England team, his parents struggle to cope with his father's deepening depression over the failing family business. Curiously neglected this is one of the funniest British films of the year.
