Both hilarious and poignant with many a sharp joke at the expense of abusive therapists and 70s attitudes. Based on the true story of the crazy childhood of poor gay Augustin whose mother, a poet and artist who, convinced she is being stifled by her husband sets off on a bizarre journey of liberation through a strange relationship with her therapist. With excellent performances from Bening as crazy Mama, Brian Cox as the nutty psychotherapist and local Svengali, this is consistently entertaining throughout.
