A small town in winter, as one man leaves his family to look for work abroad, another arrives. Charismatic and confident he is soon moving in on the first man's wife. With its scenes of landscapes shrouded in snow, and its painterly sense of lighting and composition, this is a visually superb tale of forbidden passion. It has a quiet, stark beauty, yet offers a vision of a country blighted by poverty, ignorance and unemployment, but reserves its most damning criticism for the attitudes of Iranian men. With its unsavoury but magnetic anti-hero this owes as much to film noir as the neorealism normally associated with Iranian cinema.
"...a deeply considered and wonderfully composed film," The Guardian
