Pasolini's most satisfying and beautiful film features the most astounding use of music from Bach to Billie Holliday. The beauty comes from its simplicity and the marvellous camerawork that turns the arid Italian landscape into a convincing setting for the familiar story. The director's Marxism and Catholicism serve him well as the Messiah is presented as the greatest revolutionary of all time, a determinedly political animal fuelled by anger at social injustice.
