The best Polish film for many a year, this is the story of a hard-nosed debt collector and his transformation into a real human being. Luceck, the embodiment of the new capitalist values that are sweeping Poland, mercilessly repossesses anything from vital hospital equipment to a statue of the Virgin Mary. After one particularly heartless episode he realises the error of his ways, but then finds that no one will believe he's a changed man. With superb performances all round, and a streak of mordant black humour, this is an incisive examination of the state of contemporary Poland.
