Sisters in Law (PG)

Directors: Kim Longinotto and Florence Ayissi
Starring: Vera Ngassa, Beatrice Ntuba
UK, 2005, 1 hour 46 minutes, subtitles

A perceptive and compassionate study of the Cameroonian legal system that focuses on two no-nonsense women, the State Prosecutor and Court President, as they go about their daily business of seeking justice for the women and children who turn to them for help. They deal in an intelligent and sympathetic way with cases of divorce, rape and domestic abuse. The robust example of these two funny, forthright women has clearly inspired others to step forward and challenge ‘the customary thinking’ that husbands are also masters. The film’s positive, uplifting approach leaves little doubt that, in the right hands, the law can be a potent force for good.

Director Florence Ayisi will introduce the screening on Tuesday 28
