The Last Train (U)

World Cinema

Director: Diego Arsuaga
Starring: Federico Luppe, Pepe Soriano, Gaston Pauls
Uruguay, 2002, 1 hour 33 minutes, subtitled

Determined not to let the last steam train in the country be shipped to Hollywood, three old men steal the train and set off across country pursued by the owner and the police. As they travel across the rolling plains and scrubby hills their stand becomes a cause celebre. Beautifully played from a sharp script that stays just the right side of sentimental, this is a warm-hearted movie that will be loved by any armchair activist who yearns for the simple idealism of their youth.

Nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film 2002
